Artturi Nokelainen: I Know What I Did Last Summer (part 3)
Paintings of plants and the memory after the summer. The first follow-up exhibition to my 'I know what I did last summer' at gallery Ahjo (Joensuu, 2020) was at Theodor Gallery (Loviisa) in 2023. An allegory of portrait painting, but at the same time of nostalgia, unattainable possibilities and dreams that never came true. I draw as if I spread thinned translucent paints on paper. So the illusion of shades, light and space is created by overlapping layers of colour.
I draw by painting; I find form through colour tones and not outline drawing. I do not necessarily obey perception but also let the music in the background carry my pen and colour surfaces. Representatives of the plant kingdom living in different stages of development, immortalized in group and solo portraits or quality paintings, are as their own personalities with their experiences, thoughts and feelings. The overview in the gallery also tells us about the plant's ability to break through barriers built by humans - bark mulch, asphalt surfaces, concrete, etc.
